Sunny weather is here to stay and we love to celebrate it with a warm soundtrack that brings us to the neighbourhood where Cerabella was born.
Cerabella’s first candle shop was founded in La Plaça del Pedró of Barcelona, next to Carrer de la Cera (which literally means Street of Wax.) The street is said to be named so because of the rivers of melt wax spilling from the candles burning for a Virgin that was venerated there. Besides, its is also the street where, around 1950’s, the native Catalan Romani created the Rumba catalana with its unique half Flamenco and half Cuban sound.
While listening to its songs, there is nothing better to experience this part of the city than lighting a scented candle from the Barcelona Scented Candles collection inspired by this neighbourhood: a gourmand blend with notes of grated lemon and cinnamon and hints of honey, nuts and vanilla.
Finally, just a couple of links in case you felt curious about this street soundtracks : La rumba del Carrer de la Cera, a radio program on Rumba by music journalist Jordi Turtós and Al Carrer de la Cera, a cover from the popular Gato Pérez song. We hope you enjoy!
Before electricty reached most houses in Barcelona, when the night came the vigilant or sereno gave you a piece of lighten rope candle to light the stairs up to your door. The vigilant, who held spare front door keys to most apartments and shops, used to watch out for the barrio’s tranquility at night and he would carry this rope candle in order to cut it and light it up whenever a neighbour would need it.
In Cerabella we have turned this rope candle into a flexible birthday candle that can be cut into different sizes and given funny shapes to decorate the cake. Such a playful time before blowing out the candles!
From our hands to your hands: candle handmaking procedures are slow and give us time enough to imagine how each candle will take part in other people’s life.
However, some questions remain unsolved: Which will be the special moment that each candle will illuminate? How will our candles look when your hands nicely display them?
You will easily guess the happiness of this unexpected meeting: Cerabella candles in the Passeig de Gràcia night, in the heart of the modernist Barcelona, just when the party is about to begin!
Cats ramble upon Barcelona paper city roofs and meow at the moon.
We feel passion for these handmade vintage candle designs from the 60’s!
Magic and poetry happened in Barcelona last Tuesday night thanks to Between Silence & Light installation by the Illumination Designer Michela Mezzavilla.
” I wanted to bring back a little light to each of the endless wounds on these walls” she said.
In order to create this ambience of semidarkness, the APDI, Professional Association of Illumination Designers that organised the event, finally got the city coucil permission to totally turn off the street lights of the area!
Flickering flames filled the corners of the place and the word SILENCE was written with candles on the cobblestoned pavement of Sant Felip Neri square, in the Gothic heart of the city. It was the Urban Light Festival of Barcelona: LLUM BCN
