Magic and poetry happened in Barcelona last Tuesday night thanks to Between Silence & Light installation by the Illumination Designer Michela Mezzavilla.
” I wanted to bring back a little light to each of the endless wounds on these walls” she said.
In order to create this ambience of semidarkness, the APDI, Professional Association of Illumination Designers that organised the event, finally got the city coucil permission to totally turn off the street lights of the area!
Flickering flames filled the corners of the place and the word SILENCE was written with candles on the cobblestoned pavement of Sant Felip Neri square, in the Gothic heart of the city. It was the Urban Light Festival of Barcelona: LLUM BCN

Although we are all nervous with the previous preparations, we love to make our stands.
At trade fairs we build up little landscapes for our candles: the new ones leave the factory for the first time to be under the focus, while classic models have more space and attention to become main protagonists.
If you want to take a glance, here you have some pictures of the colour circus we set up in last Intergift show.

Today is Candlemas, Virgin of the Candles day, patron saint of candlemakers.
It is said that the origins of Candlemas or Celebration of the Light are found in the ancient Roman rituals of Parentalia. During this feast, little candles were brought to the necropolis in a procession in order to guide the deceaseds’ souls. Christians assimilated this celebration and Candlemas recalls the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple, forty days after his birth. Traditionally, it is the Celebration of Light and protective beeswaxcandles are blessed for use throughout the year
Besides, February 2nd is also the exact date between the beginning of Winter and its end. First storks arrive, almond trees are in bloom and daylight starts to last longer.
In Catalan we say: “Si la Candelera riu, l’hivern és viu, si la Candelera plora, l’hivern és fora!”
(*”If the Virgin of Candles smiles, Winter is alive, but if she cries, Winter is over!”)
